The most cited study on Tritan safety was published in Food and Chemical Toxicology (Eastman-commissioned, peer-reviewed by external scientists). It tested Tritan against multiple cell-based bioassays — the gold standard for detecting estrogenic and androgenic activity at concentrations far exceeding real-world exposure.

Result: Eastman reports that third-party laboratories testing on its behalf found no detectable EA or AA under the normal-use and accelerated-stress conditions evaluated (UV exposure, boiling water, dishwasher cycles).

A 2021 study detected low-level BPA release in 2 of 10 types of finished Tritan drinking bottles tested. The researchers suggested that surface contamination during manufacturing was a possible source. Repeated dishwashing reduced or eliminated release in the specific BPA-positive bottles tested, while rinsing and handwashing were less effective. (Wang et al., Chemosphere, 2021.) A 2011 study reported estrogenic activity in tested plastic products, including some made with Tritan, under certain experimental conditions (Yang et al., Environmental Health Perspectives, 2011). Eastman disputed the methodology. In later litigation, a jury found that specific commercial statements made by PlastiPure and CertiChem about Tritan were false or misleading under the Lanham Act, and the judgment was affirmed on appeal (Eastman Chemical Co. v. PlastiPure, Inc., 5th Cir. 2014). That legal ruling addressed commercial claims and was not itself an independent scientific replication.

FDA and EU Food Contact Standards

Tritan meets:

  • FDA Food Contact Notification (FCN) No. 1041
  • EU Regulation No. 10/2011 on plastic food contact materials
  • NSF/ANSI 51 food equipment material safety certification

FDA Food Contact Notification No. 1041 is effective for the specified Eastman copolyester, supplied by Eastman or its customers, for use in repeat-use food-contact articles with all food types at temperatures up to and including 100°C. It is not blanket FDA approval of every finished product marketed as Tritan.

What "BPA-Free" Doesn't Always Mean

"BPA-free" tells you one specific chemical was removed. It says nothing about:

  • BPS (Bisphenol S) — used as a BPA replacement in many "BPA-free" bottles; a study in Environmental Science & Technology (2013) found BPS altered reproductive endocrine function in zebrafish at low concentrations
  • BPF (Bisphenol F) — another substitute; a 2015 systematic review in Environmental Health Perspectives found BPS and BPF show hormonal activity in the same general order of magnitude as BPA, though not identical potency under every condition. These findings concern BPS and BPF generally and do not demonstrate that either chemical is present in Tritan.
